I think you’ve been missing the boat with Grace VanderWaal. The changes in pop music that you discuss here were presaged in Grace’s EP, Perfectly Imperfect. In Grace’s new album, Just the Beginning, she expands on her innovations. The final track, “Darkness Keeps Chasing Me,” is a model of intensely emotional music in minor modes.
